Ubuntu is composed of many software packages, the vast majority of which are distributed under a free software license. The only exceptions are some proprietary hardware drivers. The main license used is the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL) which, along with the GNU Lesser General Public License (GNU LGPL), explicitly declares that users are free to run, copy, distribute, study, change, develop and improve the software. On the other hand, there is also proprietary software available that can run on Ubuntu. Ubuntu focuses on usability, security and stability. The Ubiquity installer allows Ubuntu to be installed to the hard disk from within the Live CD environment, without the need for restarting the computer prior to installation. Ubuntu also emphasizes accessibility and internationalization to reach as many people as possible.

AdPlug is a free, cross-platform, hardware independent AdLib sound player library

Wednesday, January 14, 2009

AdPlug is a free, cross-platform, hardware independent AdLib sound player library, mainly written in C++ and released under the LGPL.

AdPlug plays sound data, originally created for the AdLib (OPL2) and Sound Blaster (Dual OPL2/OPL3) audio boards, directly from its original format on top of an emulator or by using the real hardware. No OPL chip is required for playback.

AdPlug itself is just the backend to many different audio player frontends, which are also being developed here. There are plugins for popular audio players, like Winamp and XMMS, as well as stand-alone players for many different systems available.

Download instructions:

ATTENTION: Important update to the Winamp input plugin release system!

All changes to these instructions are designated in a red font (like this paragraph). Be sure to read them!

On the download page, first locate your desired AdPlug module, then select the version, you like to download.

There may be multiple files released with your selected version. This is either just the same release packaged in different archive formats, the respective binary or source package or a specially packaged version of the binary or source package, for that particular architecture only! You can spot the right archive for you either by examining the filename or by looking at the following table, which gives an overview of the available modules and file releases.

Module:Description:
AdPlug core library

AdPlug library source distribution for all architectures:

You need this only if you like to write your own AdPlug frontend or want/have to recompile any of the available frontends.

The following file packages are available:

  • adplug-*.tar.bz2 - bzip2 compressed source
  • adplug-*.tar.gz - gzip compressed source
  • adplg*s.zip - Stripped-down source version for DOS users only (PKZIP compressed)
  • adplug*.zip - Precompiled binary (unoptimized) for DOS users (PKZIP compressed)
AdPlay/DOS

AdPlay/DOS for MS-DOS:

AdPlay/DOS is AdPlug's MS-DOS based frontend. Sporting an exclusively programmed, highly configurable textmode interface, it provides a convenient playback experience.

The following file packages are available:

  • adplay*.zip - PKZIP compressed binary (i386 protected mode)
  • adply*s.zip - PKZIP compressed source
  • timer*.zip - Watcom C/C++ 11.x Timer Library (needed by adply*s.zip)
  • window*.zip - Watcom C/C++ 11.x Textmode Window Classes (needed by adply*s.zip)
AdPlay/UNIX

AdPlay/UNIX for UNIX compatible architectures:

AdPlay/UNIX is a classic UNIX console frontend with all the usual bells and whistles. It is proven to work well on many different kinds of UNIX flavours.

The following file packages are available:

  • adplay-*.tar.bz2 - bzip2 compressed source
  • adplay-*.tar.gz - gzip compressed source
AdPlug/Winamp

AdPlug Winamp input plugin:

The AdPlug Winamp plugin was the first available frontend for AdPlug and right now, it is the most advanced frontend of them all. If you need more information about Winamp, please go to www.winamp.com.

Since version 1.6 of the plugin, no binary versions are distributed through SourceForge's File Release System! This is because binary versions are now compiled including the latest OPL2 emulator from the MAME distribution for the best emulation quality. These later versions bear a non OSI compliant license and thus cannot be distributed through SourceForge.

Another website has been created however, where these binary versions can be downloaded, until the license issues have been resolved. If you want the binary versions, please go to:

http://www.informatik.uni-oldenburg.de/~dyna/adplug/

The following file packages are available:

  • in_adlib-*.zip - PKZIP compressed binary
  • in_adlib-*.exe - Win32 self-installing binary
  • in_adlib-*_source.zip - PKZIP compressed source
  • in_adlib-*.tar.gz - gzip compressed source
AdPlug/XMMS

AdPlug XMMS input plugin:

AdPlug/XMMS is an XMMS input plugin. It supports playback of all formats using AdPlug's OPL2 emulator only. If you need more information about XMMS, please go to www.xmms.org.

The following file packages are available:

  • adplug-xmms-*.tar.bz2 - bzip2 compressed source
  • adplug-xmms-*.tar.gz - gzip compressed source
Database

Official AdPlug Database:

The official AdPlug database is the authoritative source for AdPlug to get additional, essential replay information about problematic files. Some file formats contain too few information about a song for it to be correctly replayed by AdPlug. To counter this, the AdPlug database was created.

The official AdPlug database at one day should contain the information needed about all problematic files. If you got a problematic file that's not covered in this database, please file a bug report against the database and include either the problematic file itself or the corresponding database entry.

The following file packages are available:

  • adplug.db - uncompressed database file
  • adplugdb-*.tar.gz - gzip compressed database package

Aqualung is a music player for the GNU/Linux operating system

Aqualung is a music player for the GNU/Linux operating system. It plays audio files from your filesystem and has the feature of inserting no gaps between adjacent tracks. It also supports high quality sample rate conversion between the file and the output device, when necessary.

Almost all sample-based, uncompressed formats (e.g. WAV, AIFF, AU etc.) are supported. Files encoded with FLAC (the Free Lossless Audio Codec), Ogg Vorbis, Ogg Speex, MPEG Audio (including the infamous MP3 format) and MOD audio formats (MOD, S3M, XM, IT, etc.), Musepack are also supported.

The program can play the music through OSS, ALSA or using the JACK Audio Connection Kit.

Aqualung supports the LADSPA 1.1 plugin standard. You can use any suitable plugin to enhance the music you are listening to.

ukraine women

Features at a glance

On the input side:

  • Audio CDs can be played back and ripped to the Music Store with on-the-fly conversion to WAV, FLAC, Ogg Vorbis or CBR/VBR MP3 (gapless via LAME). Seamless tagging of the created files is offered as part of the process.
  • Internet radio stations streaming Ogg Vorbis or MP3 are supported.
  • Subscribing to RSS and Atom audio podcasts is supported. Aqualung can automatically download and add new files to the Music Store. Optional limits for the age, size and number of downloaded files can be set.
  • Almost all sample-based, uncompressed formats (e.g. WAV, AIFF, AU etc.) are supported. For the full list of these formats, visit the libsndfile homepage.
  • Files encoded with FLAC (the Free Lossless Audio Codec) are supported.
  • Ogg Vorbis and Ogg Speex audio files are supported.
  • MPEG Audio files are supported. This includes MPEG 1-2-2.5, Layer I-II-III encoded audio, including the infamous MPEG-1 Layer III format also known as MP3. For tracks containing the appropriate LAME headers, the MPEG encoder delay and padding is eliminated by Aqualung, resulting in truly gapless playback. Aqualung also supports VBR (variable bitrate) and UBR (unspecified bitrate) MPEG files.
  • MOD audio files (MOD, S3M, XM, IT, etc.) are supported via the high quality libmodplug library.
  • Musepack (a.k.a. MPEG Plus) files are supported.
  • Files encoded with Monkey's Audio Codec are supported.
  • WavPack files are supported via a native decoder.
  • Numerous formats and codecs are supported via the FFmpeg project, including AC3, AAC, WMA, WavPack and the soundtrack of many video formats.
  • Naturally, any of these files can be mono or stereo.
On the output side:
  • OSS driver support
  • ALSA driver support
  • JACK Audio Server support
  • Win32 Sound API (available only under native Win32 or Cygwin)
  • Exporting files to external formats from Playlist and Music Store is supported.

In between:

  • Continuous, gap-free playback of consecutive tracks. Your ears get exactly what is in the files – no silence inserted in between.
  • Ability to convert sample rates between the input file and the output device, from downsampling by a factor of 12 to upsampling by the same factor. The best converter provides a signal-to-noise ratio of 97dB with -3dB passband extending from DC to 96% of the theoretical best bandwidth for a given pair of input and output sample rates.
  • LADSPA plugin support – you can use any suitable LADSPA plugin to enhance the music you are listening to. There are many different equalizer, spatial enhancer, tube preamp simulator etc. plugins out there. If you don't have any, grab these.

AsteClick - MacBook Air
Other niceties:
  • Playlist tabs allow you to have multiple playlists for your music at the same time, very similarly to multiple tabbed browsing in Firefox.
  • Internally working volume and balance controls (not touching the soundcard mixer).
  • Support for multiple skins; changing them is possible at any time.
  • Support for random seeking during playback.
  • Track repeat, List repeat and Shuffle mode (besides normal playback). In track repeat mode the looping range is adjustable (A-B repeat).
  • Ability to display and edit Ogg Xiph comments, ID3v1, ID3v2 and APE tags found in files that support them.
  • All windows are sizable. You can stretch the main window horizontally for more accurate seeking.
  • You can control any running instance of the program remotely from the command line (start, stop, pause etc.). Remote loading or enqueueing soundfiles as well as complete playlists is also supported.
  • State persistence via XML config files. Aqualung will come up in the same state as it was when you closed it, including playback modes, volume and balance settings, currently processing LADSPA plugins, window sizes, positions and visibility, and other miscellaneous options.

In addition to all this, Aqualung comes with a Music Store that is an XML-based music database, capable of storing various metadata about music on your computer (including, but not limited to, the names of artists, and the titles of records and tracks). You can (and should) organize your music into a tree of Artists/Records/Tracks, thereby making life easier than with the all-in-one Winamp/XMMS playlist. Importing file metadata (ID3v1, ID3v2 tags, Ogg Xiph comments, APE metadata) into the Music Store as well as getting track names from a CDDB/FreeDB database is supported.

Although Aqualung is officially still in beta stage, it is fairly stable for everyday use. If you are looking for a player that works, Aqualung may be just what you need.

Aqualung is released under the GNU General Public License. For more info, see the Misc page.

Development history

The first version of the game was made in 2000 by Bruno Coudoin, a French software engineer. Since the first release it was distributed freely on the Internet and was protected by the GNU General Public License. The motivation behind the development was to provide native educational application for Linux. Since then, the software has seen continuous improvements, in term of graphical and number of activities, thanks to the help of many developers and graphic artists joining the project over the years.

The name GCompris comes from the French "J'ai compris", which is French for "I have understood".

If you want to add new boards, download and run GCompris, it comes with a full documentationPython. GCcompris is based on the widget Canvas from Gnome). Have a look also at the API of the gnomecanvas. that describes the GCompris internal and a step by step instruction on how to add boards. To give an idea of the amount of work, a board is usually set in a single file of about 500 lines of C code or

SVN allows you to access the latest source code

GCompris code is available from the GNOME Subversion repository.

From the Gnome web site:

Many people who are interested in working with GNOME development find their first hurdle is figuring out how to use Subversion. This document will be a quick tutorial.

Subversion is a powerful method of allowing many developers work on the same source code. This is possible because each developer checks out a copy of the current version of the source code. Then they each independently work on their personal copy of the sources. When they have made changes, they commit them back to the Subversion repository. The Subversion server takes care of things like trying to merge their changes with those of others. When that doesn’t work, the developer is notified and they do a hand merge of the conflicts.

To get the newest GCompris source from Subversion, you need to have it installed.

The first command you need is: svn co http://svn.gnome.org/svn/gcompris/trunk gcompris

To read more on Subversion on Gnome go there.

Alternatively you can browse the GCompris code online.
