Ubuntu is composed of many software packages, the vast majority of which are distributed under a free software license. The only exceptions are some proprietary hardware drivers. The main license used is the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL) which, along with the GNU Lesser General Public License (GNU LGPL), explicitly declares that users are free to run, copy, distribute, study, change, develop and improve the software. On the other hand, there is also proprietary software available that can run on Ubuntu. Ubuntu focuses on usability, security and stability. The Ubiquity installer allows Ubuntu to be installed to the hard disk from within the Live CD environment, without the need for restarting the computer prior to installation. Ubuntu also emphasizes accessibility and internationalization to reach as many people as possible.

v4l-conf : tool to configure video4linux drivers.

This package provides a small tool to configure a video4linux device driver. It is required to make the video overlay work in fbtv and xawtv.

Download Source Package xawtv:

USB UVC Video Class snapshot software.

The purpose of this software is to capture an image from a USB webcam at a specified interval, and save it to a JPEG file, no other formats are supported.

Right now this software is really a hack, since still image support is not yet available in the UVC driver. The program continually polls the UVC driver in MJPEG mode, and at a specified interval writes a JPEG header and a single frame to file, creating a JPEG image.

Download Source Package uvccapture:

Source code for the Linux UVC kernel driver is maintained in a Mercurial repository on linuxtv.org.
  • If you are an end-user the easiest way to retrieve the latest driver is to download a tarballs from the repository web browser at http://linuxtv.org/hg/~pinchartl/uvcvideo/. Both tar.gz and tar.bz2 formats are provided.
  • If you are a developer, or if you're interested in tracking the Linux UVC driver, you probably want to get a local copy of the source code repository. You should get yourself familiar with Mercurial and clone the uvcvideo repository:
    hg clone http://linuxtv.org/hg/~pinchartl/uvcvideo/

Instructions to build and install drivers from the linuxtv.org trees are available on linuxtv.org. You can skip the "Retrieve v4l-dvb sources" section if you have downloaded the source tarball.

Older versions can still be found in the Linux UVC Subversion repository on the BerliOS project page. Please do not use those versions for anything else than historical purpose.

Unpaper: post-processing tool for scanned pages.

Unpaper is a post-processing tool for scanned sheets of paper, especially for book pages that have been scanned from previously created photocopies.

The main purpose is to make scanned book pages better readable on screen after conversion to PDF. Additionally, unpaper might be useful to enhance the quality of scanned pages before performing optical character recognition (OCR).

Download Source Package unpaper:

Vamps: tool to recompress and modify the structure of a DVD.

Vamps is a tool to help backing up DVDs: Vamps evaporates DVD compliant MPEG2 program streams by selectively copying audio and subpicture tracks and by re-quantizing the video stream. Shrink ratio may be based on video only or on the full PS.

Vamps reduces the size of DVD compliant MPEG2 program streams by selectively copying audio and subpicture tracks and by resizing the embedded elementary video stream. The shrink factor may be either specified for the video elementary stream only or for the video ES only or for the full PS.

DVswitch is a digital video mixer intended for interactive live mixing of several incoming DV video streams.

Thursday, April 22, 2010

DVswitch is a digital video mixer intended for interactive live mixing of several incoming DV video streams.

Above you see the main mixer screen and 4 live sources: audio, presenter, audience, projector.

It was originally designed for the needs of DebConf. It has now been used for various other conferences, meetings and live musical performances.

Currently DVswitch can combine audio from one source with video from another and can combine two video streams with a picture-in-picture effect. Further mixing effects are planned. It works solely with the DV format since it is widely supported by camcorders and it allows for low latency display and cutting.

DVswitch was presented at FOSDEM in 2009; see the slides or the video.

If you want to see videos made with DVswitch, go to examples

Getting started.

Download from Alioth. Or, if you're running Debian unstable, "apt-get install dvswitch".

Then see the README file (doc/README or /usr/share/doc/dvswitch/README.gz).
