Ubuntu is composed of many software packages, the vast majority of which are distributed under a free software license. The only exceptions are some proprietary hardware drivers. The main license used is the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL) which, along with the GNU Lesser General Public License (GNU LGPL), explicitly declares that users are free to run, copy, distribute, study, change, develop and improve the software. On the other hand, there is also proprietary software available that can run on Ubuntu. Ubuntu focuses on usability, security and stability. The Ubiquity installer allows Ubuntu to be installed to the hard disk from within the Live CD environment, without the need for restarting the computer prior to installation. Ubuntu also emphasizes accessibility and internationalization to reach as many people as possible.

PstoEdit PostScript and PDF files to editable vector graphics converter.

Pstoedit translates PostScript and PDF graphics into other vector formats.

Implementing support for other formats should be very easy. The architecture of pstoedit consists of a PostScript frontend which needs to call a PostScript interpreter like Ghostscript and the individual backends which are pugged into a kind of framework.

This framework can be used independently from the PostScript frontend from any other program. The framework provides a uniform interface to all different backends. You need a C++ compiler to compile and GhostScript to run pstoedit. pstoedit should run on all Un*x like systems (including cygwin) and has also been ported to OS/2, Windows 9x/NT/2K/XP/Vista, and RiscOS.

For those looking to give Ubuntu a try, you can download and run the OS via the LiveCD without installing or writing anything to your hard drive. Should you decide to install, the LiveCD's installer application will allow you to resize any existing OS partitions and install into the freed space - allowing you the option to reboot back into your previous OS at any time. (Remember to backup your system first! Better safe than sorry!)

While I highly recommend the Kubuntu variant, each of the related distributions are worthy of investigation. If you're totally confused about the differences, as is the lot of anyone new to Linux, here's a simple and completely over-generalized system for you to follow:

Think of Ubuntu with its Gnome desktop (powered by the GTK+ libraries) like a Mac: more intuitive and clean, with fewer options to confuse.

Think of Kubuntu with its KDE desktop (running on the Qt libraries) like a Windows machine: more options, but possibly less intuitive to new users.

Meanwhile, Xubuntu uses the XFCE desktop, which has a lighter footprint and may perform better on older or very limited hardware.

And finally, Edubuntu is a version similar to mainstream Ubuntu, but aimed towards educational institutions.

If you're still unsure of which desktop would be best for you, don't fret about it too much: Nothing prevents you from installing multiple desktops, and any Linux application can be run on any desktop, regardless of the underlying libraries they use.

Mythbuntu Ben Dailey has announced the release of Mythbuntu 10.10, a specialist variant of Ubuntu designed for home theatre PCs: "Mythbuntu 10.10 has been released. With this release, we are providing mirroring on sponsored mirrors and torrents. It is very important to note that this release is only compatible with MythTV 0.23.1 systems. Previous Mythbuntu releases can be upgraded to a compatible version with the builds located at here, for a more detailed explanation see here. Highlights: swanky new installer; Mythbuntu-bare, a backup and restore utility for your MythTV configuration files; MythTV 0.23.1; preview of the upcoming MythNetvision plugin; Mythbuntu theme fixes." Quark is an audio player, for geeks, by geeks.

Quark is an audio player, for geeks, by geeks. It runs in the background with access provided via a FIFO in the filesystem. It uses Xine-lib for playing music, and can therefore play any file format supported by Xine.

Quark comes with a couple front-ends to make it more useful.

* charm-quark - a CLI interface
* strange-quark - a GTK System Tray interface

Download.

Recent releases:

3.24 - October 9, 2010
This is a minor bug-fix release: The translations were messed up in the last release, same with the icon for the editor window in strange-quark, and the autotools usage has been improved a bit.
3.23 - July 9, 2010
Quark is maintained again. This release uses a GtkStatusIcon instead of the custom trayicon widget, for it was using an ugly background when embedded in the LXDE panel. This also fixes an occasional crash in strange-quark when opening files. A patch used by many distributions to allow deprecated Gtk features is included.

You can see the source code or you can grab a copy of what we're working on, with git: git clone git://github.com/hsgg/quark.git quark

The Best Blog Directory and RSS Submission Sites.

Tuesday, October 5, 2010

Do you want to submit the RSS feed of your website to tons of RSS directories? Do you need greater exposure and visibility for your content but don't know where to go? Stop wandering. In this guide you will find the best and reliable blog directories and RSS submission sites to make your website known.

Until a few years ago the web was populated by web sites and other HTML-based content pages, thus the main vehicle for reaching content was the large use of major search engines and directories. But as a rapidly increasing number of content sources started to leverage RSS as a key distribution channel, the ability to maintain high exposure and visibility has found an ally in RSS feed submission sites and directories.

The problem with RSS directories and submission sites is that there are so many of them that it is almost impossible to have the time to track and try each one. Especially if you run more than one website, finding and testing all the RSS directories out there makes up for a positively extended nightmare: trust me.

I have been inspired and prompted to collect all these RSS feed directories and submission sites by my own need to support skilled change agents and communicators like the ones I personally support (Sepp Hasslberger, Chris Gupta, Ivan Ingrilli) and also by the nice initiative of Ari Paparo to collect a set of online resources where anyone could easily submit her new blog / RSS feed.

Over the years, this list of RSS directories has been updated many times and it has recently crossed 250 RSS directories, which make up for a truly unique collection of venues that you can use to achieve greater visibility for your website content.

One of the key benefits of this list of RSS directories and blog submission sites, is that this resource provides all of the submission links directly, so that you don't have to waste any time at all to find any RSS directory at each destination site. This by itself is a significant effort, especially as a number of sites make it consciously hard to find this info, in order to discourage spam and superficial or automated submissions. In some cases, I have been able to dig out valuable emails and contact forms after a lot of searching.

For this resource to be useful to as much people as possible, I have decided to focus only on English-based global directories and not to include any regional or geographically limited directories. I have also dropped any service that did not look completely reliable or trustable.

Other lists of RSS submission sites available online are either too superficial, not updated (including many web sites that either do not work or are not reliable) or are just listing many search services and tools which do not rely on manual submission to become aware of new blogs sites and RSS feeds.

The directories to which to submit your RSS feed are listed in reverse chronological order (first up the most recent and newly added ones; down bottom what I have collected first) and NOT according to any importance order.

Do you want all blog directories and RSS submission sites in one place?

E3 is a micro text editor with an executable code size between 3800 and 35000 bytes.

Saturday, October 2, 2010

e3 is a very compact editor.

e3 is a micro text editor with an executable code size between 3800 and 35000 bytes, depending on used assembler options, platform and self compressor.

Except for 'syntax highlighting', the e3 binary supports all of the basic functions one expects plus built in arithmetic calculations. If you have installed the stream editor 'sed' you can use these tools as sub-processes, getting the full power of regular expressions.

e3 can use Wordstar-, EMACS-, Pico, Nedit or vi-like key bindings, whichever the user chooses. Also the user can calculate arithmetics inside the text.

e3's assembler version is available on 11GNU Emacs is an extensible, customizable text editor—and more. At its core is an interpreter for Emacs Lisp, a dialect of the Lisp programming language with extensions to support text editing. The features of GNU Emacs include:

    * Content-sensitive editing modes, including syntax coloring, for a variety of file types including plain text, source code, and HTML.
    * Complete built-in documentation, including a tutorial for new users.
    * Full Unicode support for nearly all human languages and their scripts.
    * Highly customizable, using Emacs Lisp code or a graphical interface.
    * A large number of extensions that add other functionality, including a project planner, mail and news reader, debugger interface, calendar, and more. Many of these extensions are distributed with GNU Emacs; others are available separately. most important x86 OS, see below for details.
Also available is an (alpha level) 32 bit native code assembler version for StrongARM ("Advanced Risc Machine") CPUs.

There is also a GNU-C-written version for non-i386-Unix and non-ARM-Linux platforms (e3.c) using Wordstar keybindings only. This README doesn't further mention e3.c. (Just make it!)

e3 is designed to be INDEPENDENT OF LIBC OR ANY OTHER library, except on QNX and Win32.

e3 has been tested using the terminal console, but Xterm, Eterm, rxvt, kvt, vt220 and vt100 should work too.

Usage

All versions of e3 accept a filename as argument; see the man page.

· There is a status and input line, where you can enter filenames, find-texts, line numbers etc. In the lower right corner you will find a code like "WS" showing the selected editor mode and a help pointer (EXCEPT vi).

· e3 changes the appearance of the cursor (to reverse) depending on insert/overwrite mode (on Linux text console only).

· For details on key bindings read each e3xx's initial page or type Alt-H during edit (for vi use ESC:h).

· On some computers (BeOS, QNX etc.) Alt-key combinations won't work: press followed by the key, e.g. press ESC and H instead of Alt-H.

· e3 shows a dot for characters below ASCII 20h and greater 7Fh (except on win9x and except on UTF-8 version).

· At the end of an edit cycle, e3 asks you something like "SAVE? Ynl". Press "n" to NOT save, "l" for SAVE and LOAD new, any other for SAVE and EXIT.

What's New in This Release:

· Final release: adjusted to current versions of NASM and YASM assemblers.
