Ubuntu 25.04 “Plucky Puffin” Overview.

Ubuntu 25.04 is an early-stage version of the Ubuntu operating system. Its new features include:

A new compiler that will make applications use more sophisticated algorithms, which will increase system performance. However, this change could cause some programs to not work correctly.

A new version of the GNOME desktop, probably GNOME 48.

A new version of the Linux Kernel, probably 6.14.

Updates to system packages and important libraries.

Improvements to SNAP packages.

Because Ubuntu 25.04 is in an early stage of development, some experts recommend not installing it as the main system on a PC. Instead, it is recommended to test it in a virtual machine to avoid affecting the main system.

The most stable version of Ubuntu is the LTS, which has 10 years of support, maintenance, and updates. The next LTS version of Ubuntu, Ubuntu 24.04, is scheduled to be released on April 25, 2024.

A new terminal app called Ptyxis.

ptyxis

As expected, the first Daily Builds are basically the previous version, 24.10, with the developer repositories on top of which the changes that will arrive next April are added. It's December, still about four months away, and the operating system is not very different from Oracular Oriole. But some of the possible details of Plucky Puffin are already known: it could arrive with Ptyxis as a terminal application.

Right now and for some time now, GNOME Terminal is the terminal application for Ubuntu 24.10, and that has not yet changed in 25.04, currently in development. But the Canonical desktop team is discussing a change. It explains that Ptyxis would be a recommended replacement for gnome-terminal.
