Canonical has recently unveiled the name Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, the next long-term version of the operating system.
Canonical has announced via its account on X the name of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, the next version with long-term maintenance, which is called the “Resolute Raccoon”. It is a name chosen by the former head of Linux distributions Debian and Ubuntu, Steve Langasek, who was also dedicated to why he passed away in early 2025. It also follows the tradition of the developers to match an adjective to an animal for each version of the operating system.
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is called Resolute Raccoon
As usual, the choice of code name for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS has a specific meaning. The adjective “Resolute” (resolute) indicates determination and firmness, which is very suitable for a Long Term Support (LTS) version on which millions of users will rely for years. The Raccoon is an animal known for its versatility, intelligence and adaptability, characteristics that reflect the essence of Canonical’s Linux distribution: a flexible operating system, capable of operating in different contexts, from servers to desktops, to IoT environments.
Ubuntu's code names, a tradition that began in 2004 with the first version, known as the Warty Warthog, are not just a stylistic habit. They serve to clearly identify versions during development, avoiding errors such as sending code to the wrong repository. “Resolute” is, for example, less ambiguous than “2604”. In addition, the numbering system is based on the expected release date (year and month, 26.04 for April 2026), but the code names offer an additional level of security, especially in case of delays, as happened in 2006 with Ubuntu 6.06.
Like all long-standing versions, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS will ensure 5 years of guaranteed desktop updates, including 3 years of hardware support updates and an additional 5 years of critical security patches via the Ubuntu Pro program. Among the new features, the new LTS is expected to include GNOME 50, the next version of the desktop environment with all the improvements to the case, Prompting Client active by default for smoother permission management, Totem player replacement with Showtime, and improvements to TPM-based disk encryption.
Release is expected in April next year, barring possible setbacks in development. More information about the features will surely emerge in the coming weeks.
